August is the cruelest month for the Bengali people. They have lost the father of the nation, Sheik Mujibur Rahman, on 15th (1975) of this month. Now, it is the National holiday. But, when we see that four major poets of the 20th century Bengali literature also died in August, it seems that the month is far more cruel to the people of Bengal as anyone could even imagine. Rabindranath Tagore, the 1913 Nobel Laureate in Literature, died on August 7, 1941. Kazi Nazrul Islam, though known as the rebel poet, his lyrics, love poems and the poems against British rule made him a great influence in Bengalis, died on August 29, 1976. Shamsur Rahman, one of the major poets of the modern era, died on August 17, 2006. Finally, Dr. Humayun Azad, a well known professor of the University of Dhaka, and a major poet of the Hungry Generation, died on August 11, 2004.
Shabdaguchha, the International Bilingual Poetry Journal, pays tribute to all four poets and Sheik Mujibur Rahman, the father of the Bangladeshi Nationality.
